Jennifer Lopez is a TV producer with a clear vision, according to Cristian de la Fuente.
He should know.
De la Fuente is the male lead in Univision's highly anticipated miniseries "Como Ama Una Mujer" ("How a Woman Loves") - J.Lo's
brainchild, inspired by her recent Spanish-language CD.
"I think it's always good to deal with a producer that knows exactly what she wants, especially in a show like this one, that tells the story of
her album," de la Fuente told the Daily News yesterday. "When you know your destination, it's easy to have a good trip."
"Como Ama Una Mujer" is a major project for Univision, which is banking on Lopez's name to help make it a big Nielsen draw. Indeed, each
episode will include a musical performance by Lopez.
The first episode airs Oct. 30 at 10 p.m.; the series will run for consecutive Tuesdays.
De la Fuente, a Chilean who is currently shooting a USA Network series, "In Plain Sight" - plays a Mexican soccer star in "Como Ama Una
Mujer." He's engaged to an equally famous woman (Leonor Varela) when the relationship hits a snag and they split up. Soon she's dating another
man, and the soccer player wants her back.
Can you say love triangle?
De la Fuente said he'd listened to Lopez's music before filming started because the songs are so integral to the story line.
"When I was reading the script, you can see one story and it fades to one song," he says. "Every song has a lot to do with the story.
It's a TV show that's written based on the soundtrack. That's different from where maybe they do the show and then they put in the
music."
"It's something different," de la Fuente says of the project. "Univision always does soap operas, long shows they run for six month. We
did this as a miniseries, it's one camera - it has the feeling of a movie, in a way."
"Como Ama Una Mujer" was shot in August and early September in Mexico City.
Having Lopez as the inspiration - and producer - doesn't create extra pressure, says de la Fuente.
"You always feel pressure," he says. "You always want to do a good project."
