A review of Marc's concert, and of that audience ( Probably just as well the twins stayed home,
) :
When Marc sang to Michael Jackson | #119 | ||
|
-- Note the MJ song chosen.
http://blogs.courant.com/...-michael-jacksons-l.html It was also the last set of concerts ever performed by Michael Jackson. A surreal, frustrating, star-pocked, stop and start pair of shows he was throwing at Madison Square Garden Sept. 7 and 10, 2001, under the title "30th Anniversary Tribute," marked his three decades as a hitmaker. A network special would be cobbled out of the two shows (rerunning, as it happens, tonight on TV One), but seeing them live, the first of them would have been memorable, even if it hadn't one of his last. For the first half of the five hour concert, in which he was making his first major public appearance in a decade, Jackson sat like a King of Pop, in a royal box with a court that included Macauley Caulkin on one side and Elizabeth Taylor on the uther. Such classic film stars as Janet Leigh and Ann Miller squirmed in their chairs in sections where rappers like Jay-Z and P. Diddy checked their cell-phone messages in the next seats over. Stars like Whitney Houston, Marc Anthony, Liza Minnelli, and others, came out to sing his songs. Then stars like Shaggy and Destiny's Child came out to sing their own hits for no particular reason (the latter adding a "Billie Jean" groove incongruously to "Bootylicious."). There was even a long, contentious speech in there by a star who had possibly been more reclusive than Jackson -- Marlon Brando, who sat on a couch center stage and pontificated on child welfare issues. Finally, Miss Taylor stepped to the microphone to give the crowd what it wanted: Jackson on stage. In a manner befitting a world that sometimes treated him like he was from another planet, Jackson, 43, stepped on stage in a spacesuit and helmet. He appeared first with his brothers, as the Jacksons presented their first gig in decades, using some of the original Motown choreography. After a medley of ``Can You Feel It,'' ``ABC'' and ``The Love You Save,'' Jackson sang his first solo on ``I'll Be There'' before `N Sync jumped on stage to join their predecessors in ``Dancing Machine.'' Jackson paired with another contemporary pop star, Britney Spears, for a sweet duet version of his ``The Way You Make Me Feel.'' Then it was Jackson all alone, finally, for a crowd-pleasing ``Billie Jean,'' complete with original glove and moonwalk. Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash joined him on a pair of rock songs, ``Black and White'' and ``Beat It,'' before the star played the one new song of the night, ``You Rock My World,'' from his forthcoming ``Invincible'' album. And though he still thrilled with his footwork, adding a sideways variation to the moonwalk during "Billie Jean," he also showed that on the one new song, his voice had changed from its perpetually high, adolescent wail to a lower intonation. Mostly, though, his vocals were lip-synched. That meant, thanks to recording technology, he sounded exactly as he did when he recorded songs such as ``Beat It'' and ``Black and White.'' At least there were some live performance elements to those -- for "Billie Jean," it was entirely the recorded track, making it look more and more like an unsure Michael Jackon impersonator rather than the real thing. Unsure of how realistic the lip synching would look on TV he often covered his mouth as he sang to mask any inconsistencies. He didn't show off his lower voice until the new song, ``You Rock My World'' and his first solo with the Jackson Five Friday -- a dodgy ``I'll Be There.'' Still, there were some moments of pure pop pleasure, as in the playful duet with Britney (which, shockingly, wasn't used in the final TV cut for whatever reason). It might have been strange to highlight a celebration of solo years with a reunion of his first group, but it was nice to see the brothers performing together again. Running through the old hits, the still-shy Jackson could retreat into the group dance moves and harmonies -- though he starkly stood apart from his brothers in skin tone and demeanor. He even appeared on stage with them for the first time in a spacesuit complete with helmet, as if he came from Krypton and not Gary, Ind. It was the kind of weirdness you began to take for granted with Jackson. As with Elvis (to whose daughter he was once wed), he had long since become a campy icon representing an entire era. So the way I recalled surviving the concert was to wallow in the weird: from a heavy and heavily made up Minnelli crooning ``Neverland,'' to a large Brando, muttering on a stage about Jackson's charity, chastising the crowd for its inattention. In the Brando segment, not included in the TV version, the hulking film icon sat on a couch on stage silent, as if to wait for the noise to subside. Finally Brando broke his silence: ``Hundreds, if not thousands of children all over the world were hacked to death by machetes, beaten to death by their parents,'' or succumbed to disease, he began. All in a pitch for Jackson's charity at a Michael Jackson website, Brando said, ``I could talk for another hour and a half,'' to catcalls and whistles from the audience. ``Please listen to what I'm saying,'' Brando admonished the audience. (Though there was never any evidence that the concerts were benefits, despite Brando's pleas and comedian Chris Tucker's comment on stage that everyone was working for free -- nothing was mentioned in the $25 program or on the website Brando urgently touted.) Because of the TV special, there was a lot of setup time for each song and enough downtime that many in the crowd booed. Some of the moments of stars saluting Jackson with his own hits worked well. Marc Anthony, a pro with a great voice, breathed life in "She's Out of My Life'', and Billy Gillman, then 13, was the right choice for ``Ben,'' being about the same age as Jackson was when he recorded the ode to a rat. An emaciated Whitney Houston added some star power to the opening ``Wanna Be Startin' Somethin,''' in which Usher and Mya sang and briefly were hoisted by wire amid dancers and fire-eaters. But the pacing excruciatingly slowed, it became clear that the audience members, no matter how much they had paid for tickets, were nothing more than expendable extras in the TV show, the taping of which took obvious precedence. As the audience waited for Jackson, there seemed less and less reason to have Shaggy, Destiny's Child or Ray Charles with Cassandra Wilson singing their own songs. As pleasant as it may have been to hear Gloria Estefan or James Ingram sing ``I Just Can't Stop Loving You,'' or to have Jill Scott, Al Jarreau, Deborah Cox and Monica do a number from ``The Wiz,'' nobody paid to see these things. (Ticket prices ranged from $48.50 to $2,503.50) The boos began in earnest after two consecutive songs about changing the world -- ``Heal the World'' with Monica, Tamia, Mya, Cox and Rah Digga and Minnelli's ``You Are Not Alone.'' Some left in disgust before Jackson finally appeared with his brothers, who were augmented during ``Dancing Machine'' by 'N Sync -- a pairing that only showed how more easily the contemporary group could hit higher notes. (They had worked together days earlier at the MTV Video Music Awards held at the Metropolitan Opera House). A rendition of ``We Are the World'' that closed the first night show after 12:30 a.m. dragged on despite its own kooky roster of stars. Not only did it include many original participants (including Quincy Jones, Kenny Rogers, Ray Charles, Dionne Warwick and Al Jarreau) reprising their parts, many others were joining in for the first time. The night's entire cast, plus a few people who hadn't been seen until then, from Aaron Carter to Yoko Ono, were among the latter group. But plenty of musical talent in the crowd including rappers like Nelly, Jay-Z and P. Diddy, went untapped as well. Practically the only words Jackson had for the audience were the dozens of refrains all night of ``I love YOU'' to the crowd that chose to stay.
